Our homes become our preferred place to be during the long winter months, as many of us try our best to escape the cold and stay cozy indoors. Before you settle down under the covers with a hot beverage, it is important to ensure that your home is properly cared for at this time of year. Here are our top 3 tips to help ensure that your home is properly maintained this winter.

  1. Keep house warm & prevent heat loss (avoid frozen pipes!). Make sure that your homes’ heat source is in proper working order. It’s also important to ensure the caulking around your windows and doors is in good shape, as this could lead to heat loss in the home. A big thing to remember is to never turn the heat off in the winter – maintain adequate temperatures throughout the house. If you are leaving for a vacation, ensure you have the heat set to a suitable temperature, or have a family member or friend check in on the home. You don’t want to come home to frozen pipes!
  2. Fire and carbon monoxide safety. House fires tend to increase in the winter months due to malfunctioning heating systems or an unattended fireplace. Fireplaces and chimneys require regular cleanings to stay safe and effective. It’s important to keep fire extinguishers in accessible areas and ensure your exit points are kept unobstructed. It is also important to regularly test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check the batteries, especially during the winter months when we keep the windows closed and use wood burning stoves or fireplaces.
  3. Snow accumulation. Remember to remove the snow from around the exterior of your home after a snowfall, including areas such as air intakes, exhaust vents, and any large amount of heavy snow from the roof.

Staying on top of your home maintenance during the winter months is important to ensure that you and your families are kept safe and warm.
